What is dyslexia?

Waiting – Fabrizio Ignesti, Rome – Telecom Italia Group

Poor performance at school can be a sign of many problems and disorders of different types, but it is also a sure sign of what the World Health Organisation defines as specific learning disorders (dyslexia, poor spelling, dyscalculia and dysgraphia).

These are physical disturbances, of neurobiological origin, which make it very difficult to learn to read, write and perform calculations for intelligent children who do not have any other types of disorder.

Reading and writing are acts that are so simple and automatic that it is difficult to understand the difficulties of a dyslexic child, who manages to read and write only by using their capacity and energy to the maximum, and for this reason they tire quickly, make mistakes, fall behind, fail to learn and see the written text as a hostile, difficult instrument and a source of unease. The disorder inevitably takes its toll on overall academic learning and has significant effects at the level of the self esteem and psychological balance of children and young people. In undetected cases, where this difficulty is not properly dealt with, it leads to the abandonment of academic studies, or in the choice of a training course and then a work activity of a lower grade than the real aptitude of the subject.
